Shifting Notions Of The Nation State

Will National Ideologies Dominate Global Politics in 21st Centrury?

Dr. A.M. Singhvi, Jean Echenoz, Pavan K Varma and Tarun Vijay

Moderated by: Bhupendra Chaubey

Nationalist ideology continues to shape global politics today. Migration and diaspora create cultural, economic and social networks, which now bind people across entire continents, let alone countries. Some nation-builders have reacted to globalisation as a potential threat, while others see it as a significant boost to their country’s power and influence. Sub-state nationalists continue to compete for people’s loyalty and support. This session will discuss whether nationalists should reconsider the meaning of self-determination, independence, autonomy and sovereignty in an increasingly interconnected world?

Star - Then and Now

Evolution, Exploration and Exploitation of Star in Hindi Cinema over the Last Decades

Aseem Chhabra, Gautam Chintamani and Yasser Usman

Moderated by: Mayank Shekhar

In Partnership With: Chitrashala

The one-man-industry keeps changing its favorites from Rajesh Khanna to Amitabh Bachchan to the trio of the Khans- Aamir, Salman & Shah Rukh, to the present times, where the definition of a film star as well as what constitutes them has undergone a major transformation. One aspect that has played a major role in this process is social media. Today, everyone right from the biggest stars to upstarts, no one can avoid the media blitzkrieg surrounding a new film.
The session will explore the whys of old-school belief of mystery making a star bigger. Would there have been lesser fans of Madhubala, had people seen behind-the-scenes of some of her iconic films or photos? Would Rajesh Khanna have had a consistent fan following, had there been social media uproar during his heydays? Could an Amitabh Bachchan afford to ignore press as he did for almost a decade from mid 70's to mid 80's? The session shall also juxtapose one of the biggest stars today- Kangana Ranaut, and the yesteryears’ definition of a star. It shall be a discussion to demystify the aura surrounding a Hindi Film Star.

Ravinder Singh and Kiran Manral

Happily ever after. The very genre itself has persisted down the aeons, from Shirin-Farhad, Laila-Majnu, Heer-Ranjha, Romeo-Juliet, to Elizabeth and Darcy, and now, our modern heroes and heroines, who may have discarded the pigeon and the love letter for whatsapp and snapchat, but the emotion still remains the same as it did all those years ago.
Why do we love reading romances? What is it about romance that has us all, across age groups and genders, devour them? Our panel decodes the allure of the age old genre.

The Difficulty of Being Good

Gurcharan Das in conversation with Rakhee Bakshee

Most of us spend our lives wrestling with day-to-day questions of right and wrong. However, these either remain unanswered or have no easy answers.

In this session, Rakhee Bakshee talks to Gurcharan Das about his book in which he turns to the Sanskrit epic, Mahabharata, in order to answer the question, ‘Why Be Good?’; and discovers that the epic’s world of moral haziness and uncertainty is closer to our experience as ordinary human beings rather than the narrow and rigid positions that define most debate and discussion today after 9/11.

5 C’s of Writing a Great Thriller Novel

Ravi Subramanian, S M Pathak & Vish Dhamija

Moderated by: Satyarth Nayak

Remember when Tommy Lee Jones holds up the empty shackles in The Fugitive and says, “You know, we’re always fascinated when we find leg irons with no legs in ’em”? It makes one think of readers who pick up thrillers and find no thrills in them. Or at least not as many as there could be. It’s possible to have guns and bombs and hit men and terrorists and black helicopters, and still not have a novel that grips the reader in the gut.
James Scott Bell says doze of vitamin C - Complex Characterisation, Confrontation, Careening, Cornorary and Communication are the key to a successful thriller. The session shall have three successful writers share their exerience of writing thrillers.

My Lords, I Rest My Case!

From Legal Literature to Literature in Law : Changing Contours of Judicial Opinion

Dr. Abhishek Manu Singhvi, Justice A.K. Sikri and Sanjay Hegde

Moderated by: Dr. Saif Mahmood

Legal literature in the form of judicial opinion has long been seen as an almost distinct literary genre. While deciding pure questions of law from the Bench, judges have churned out some of the most evocative pieces of literature. The last few years, however, have seen an increasing number of judgments quoting from poets and writers across board, sometimes in a manner where real legal issues are lost in rhetoric. Does this trend bear testimony to the power of literature or does it foretell the death of purity in judicial opinion. A distinguished panel of judges and lawyers deliberates.

How Stories are set to change Notions about Road Safety

Piyush Jha and Tuhin Sinha

Moderated by: Gunjan Veda

#HASJ short story contest stems out of our firm belief that literature can serve as an effective medium to connect and engage with people for promoting awareness, particularly among the youth. Stories can cause deep influence and impressions, both for writers and the readers. Stories written, pointing out the negligence and casual approach towards road safety norms leading to major upheavals and loss not only for family members of victims and accused, but also for communities and the country, would touch hearts. Stories of braveries, humanity and other inspirational stories often compel people to think more deeply than an advertisement in a newspaper. It also has a long shelf life. There is a pressing need to apply this literary art in promoting awareness about road safety.

Hindi cinema would have had to invent them had they not existed. Perhaps the first amongst equals in the list of filmmakers who blazed a trail for others, Khan remains the unspoken hero who has single-handedly changed the way we look at Hindi films. Kundan Shah left a giant footprint on Bollywood through his small budget film that went to develop the reputation of India's definitive black comedy. This session will provide a flashback into the memorable cinema they made.

Indian Fourth Estate - The Dangerous Divide

Dinesh Trivedi, Maya Mirchandani, Sudheendra Kulkarni & Tarun Vijay

Moderated by: Nalin Mehta

It is no longer merely a sharp differences of opinion among journalists. The confounded definition of nationalism appears to have led to a sharp divide within the media. The perception is that many establishments seem to have blurred the line between nation and government or for that matter between government and political dispensation. While some claim that a few media houses are programmed to toe the line of a nationalist government, others claim with equal confidence that another section media is conspiring against the government or a political dispensation. An aggressive social media that entertains no notions of a nuanced argument is increasingly also fueling the confrontational stance. The media, increasingly, appears to mirror this tone, speaking in black-or-white binaries rather reflecting shades of opinion.

This session will discuss what standing up for journalists’ duty and freedom means.
